What Really Matters

This is the time of year when graduates who have recently
graduated are thinking about what direction their life is going to go,
and I imagine more than one person who has “already arrived”
in life starts to wonder the same thing about their own life…
Where is my life going?
Did I make the right decision?
Do I stay on this path, or do I look for something else?
Perhaps you are wondering what the purpose of your life even is?
Those questions can lead to some good and potentially life-changing conversations.
The answer you will come to, will certainly depend on who you talk to, and what you’ve already experienced or witnessed.
For some, the ultimate goal in life is to “eat, drink, and be merry.”
Making the most of every moment in entertainment and enjoying whatever this life has to offer.
For others, the goal is to be a “productive member of society,” or even think the goal in life is to “reach my max potential.” It doesn’t matter who you are, what your opinion is, or how close you got to attaining your “dream(s).
” If your goal isn’t the same as God’s…you’ve missed the mark.
In the Old Testament book of Solomon, we find the ultimate purpose of life per the words of King Solomon in Ecclesiastes 12:13
“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.”
It’s that simple.
Fear God: is a call that puts us in our place, and God in His. Out of respect and honor for what He did and who He is. Keep His commandments: Do what God calls you to do.
(1 John 5:2–3)
Solomon wasn’t just another king sitting on a throne, Solomon was “the wisest man who ever lived.”
In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon gives an account of how he enjoyed everything this life has to offer from riches to knowledge, from possessions to anything your heart desires… and even with all his “wisdom,” Solomon was just like most everyone else today who “have to learn the lesson the hard way.”
So if you ever start to wonder what your purpose is, or what do you do now,
come back to these verses and see what the wisest man ever concluded after his 40 yrs.
as king of Israel. “Fear God and keep His commandments.”
You do that, and you can rest in knowing you are making your life count…and it all mattered in the end.
